Responsibilites for a Sports Management Professional

While sports management can be a rewarding and exciting field, it is not without certain responsibilites and expectations. A professional in this field should expect to work 50-60 hour weeks on average. Also, because of the fact that certain fields such as sports agenting go on at all hours, working nights and weekends should be a given.

There is a legal aspect of business management that a professional in the field should expect to work with. Developing a risk management plan for potential legal issues is one responsibility that could be encountered. When working in a sporting event or within a program, a sports management professional will work with all business aspects including ticketing, accounting and financial operations. Other responsibilites include sales of sporting goods and licensed sporting products, facility and event management, and sports broadcasting and media relations.

Ethics of Management

As a sports management professional, your reputation will be of utmost importance. Your responsibility to uphold a good reputation will be critical as it can make or break a career in this field. When speaking of sports agenting, athletes, coaches, and athletic programs will be searching for a sports management professinal that will be in line with their own set of ethics. Recognizing the morals and ethics of those you plan to work with will be key to your success in this field

Be Business Savvy

One critical note that a sports management professional should always keep in mind is that when they choose this profession, they are choosing to mix sports with business; and if they love sports than they are mixing business with pleasure. It is essential that one realizes this before they take on the field. Knowing how to market oneself and a sports-related product is essential in this field.

Take Time to Relax

It has been noted that professionals in this field can easily become stressed by over-working. It will be your responsibility as a professional in this field to take a step back and reflect on what is important. There are plentiful subfields within sports management and it is important to constantly evaluate where you belong and/or where you'd like to be five, ten or twenty years down the road. Priorities will be key in this field. When a sports management professional is able to put themselves in the right position to work efficiently, everybody wins.
